Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation
The following instructions are very important if you and Dr. Schwartz have determined that IV Sedation is best for your oral surgery procedure. We ask that you read them carefully and adhere to all of them on the morning of your oral surgery appointment. They are put into place to insure that your doctor is able to proceed with your scheduled oral surgery as planned and obtain correct and accurate readings of all monitors used during your procedure. Please do not hesitate to ask the doctor, or any member of his surgical staff, any questions that you may have about the pre-anesthesia instructions at your initial consultation appointment.
- Do not have anything to eat or drink for six (6) hours prior to the appointment. This includes water and coffee. Patients scheduled for morning surgery should not have anything to eat or drink after midnight, the night before surgery. Those patients scheduled for afternoon surgery should only have clear liquids at breakfast, and should be consumed no later than six (6) hours before afternoon surgery.
- Medications normally taken, should only be taken before surgery if discussed with and agreed upon by Dr. Schwartz prior to the surgical appointment. They may then only be taken with a small sip of water.
- Please wear casual clothing with either short sleeves or loose sleeves that can be rolled up easily over elbows. We would also prefer two piece outfits, as this allows us to properly place all monitoring devices.
- A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office. The responsible party must remain in the office during the procedure, be able to come back into the surgical suite, watch the surgical staff change surgical gauze dressing, understand all post-operative instructions, ask all questions which may arise and drive the patient home. It is very important that the responsible party you bring with you be able to remain calm and most importantly, be able to handle the sight of blood. Please make sure that you and your responsible party take care of all errands, arrange for other children to be picked up from school, arrange for work absence, go shopping or fill your prescriptions, etc BEFORE you come to our office for the surgery. If you would like to get your prescriptions filled before the surgery, please ask your doctor to give the prescriptions to you at the initial consultation appointment. Due to the classification of the narcotics Dr. Schwartz prescribe, these medications may not be called into a pharmacy by our office.
- Please do not wear any lipstick, lip gloss, or lip balm on the day of surgery. You may bring some lip balm for use after the procedure is over. Please do not wear heavy face make-up or fingernail polish on the day of surgery. All of these items interfere with the surgery and our ability to obtain correct readings from our monitoring equipment.
- Please refrain from wearing heavy jewelry or multiple items on either wrists the day of surgery.
- Any change in your health, especially the development of a cold, fever or cough is very important. Please notify our office as soon as possible if you develop any change in your health, at the latest, the day before you are scheduled for surgery. If you have a change in your health on the day of your surgery, please notify our office the morning of your surgery or as soon as you arrive at our office.
- A responsible party must drive the patient home from surgery. Buses and taxi-cabs are not acceptable. The patient should not drive a vehicle, operate potentially dangerous equipment or make important decisions for 24 hours following anesthesia.
- A responsible adult should remain with the patient at home until the next day, at the very least.
- No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery and at the very least, 24 hours after surgery.
Please call our office at Daniel M. Schwartz DMD MD LLC Phone Number 216-464-1200 before you come in for your scheduled surgical procedure if you have any questions or concerns regarding these instruction.
